5 "E"mazing!!!!

Since October I have implemented the 5 E lesson plan strategy of instruction in my classroom as much as possible.  I ABSOLUTELY love it!!  I am no longer standing in the front of the room for 30 or 40 minutes lecturing my 7th graders.  They are engrossed in mini projects, some that take a few days, some that take a class period.  All in all, my students seem to be more engaged and are learning the material with more ease.  I taught the unit on Genetics with this strategy and it was very effective.

I love getting away from a lecture based classroom.  My students are asking more questions, they are turning into scientists!!! =)

  1. Your post was exciting to read! I think I will try the 5E in my lessons and see if I get the same exciting results! I have second graders, so it's a tad different! We also have science at the last section of time alotted in the day!

    1. I'm glad you will try it!! I just posted on your blog that you should!! haha. Letting your 2nd graders explore will be a great thing! Look up songs by Peter Weatherall on YouTube, they are geared for younger students, but funny enough, my 7th graders LOVE them!! I actually had one student download a song onto his IPod!! yay!

  2. It sound like you have turned a corner in your teaching. By that I mean you are at the point where you have confidence in your changes. Congrats!

    1. I am still feeling out the 5 E, but yes, I am getting more comfortable with it and very much enjoying watching the kids "figure things out". I like being a guide rather than the teacher. My kids are smart, they grasped onto genetics much quicker than any other year I've taught it!

  3. How did you originally learn about the 5 E’s? I would love to have a professional development class on the 5 E’s.

  4. I learned about the 5 E's at a science conference I attended this fall. I had read the description and thought it sounded interesting. As they were talking and we were going through a 5 E lesson ourselves I could immediately see the benefit. I would like to have more professional development on it as well!! I want to know more!
